What Is The Problem And How Do I Fix It?

Mushrooms grow on decomposing organic material. The material on your lawn that is decomposing may be old tree roots or any other organic material that you have added to the soil. Many of the bagged soils that are sold now contain high percentages of organic material and less mineral soil. The presence of organic matter on the lawn, plus the extreme damp weather that we can have combine to make ideal growing conditions for mushrooms. For the most part this problem does not persist.

The onset, if it comes, of hot dry weather will quickly discourage mushroom growth. However, an application of lime to the areas where the mushrooms are growing will sweeten the soil and reduce the natural habitat for mushroom growth.

If you are noticing that there are a lot of mushrooms growing right at the base of a tree on your property make sure to inspect the tree to see if it is healthy. Trees that have rotted roots and are dying will often have lots of mushrooms growing near their base. (not to worry if there is only a few though)
